VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: I'm attorney Behram Parekh. Sometimes we're asked what is a whistleblower lawsuit? In a whistleblower lawsuit an individual with knowledge of an organizations activities provides information about fraud, corruption, or other illegal activity. And files a lawsuit in order to stop that from happening and to recover the money that's been illegally obtained. Whistleblowers are often employees, former employees, and others who have access to a company's internal documents and information. Whistleblowers are people who have the intergrity to stand up and call attention to wrong-doing in government and private industry. They report unethical and illegal activities because it is the right thing to do. Often whistleblowers have tried to report those activities within the company and have weither been ignored or even retailiated against for their efforts. To protect and reward those whistleblowers filing the lawsuit under the false claims act or other state statutes can both protect the whistleblower from retailiation from their company and sometimes reward the whistleblower for their efforts. IF the government recovers money because of information a whistleblower provides he or she may be entitled to a portion of those funds. Typically a whistleblower recieves somewhere between 20 to 30% of the amount recovered. That can be a substantial amount of money. In many states similar laws reward those who blow the whislte on fraud against the state government as well.
